thanks... and cheerier things!

Thank you all for the comments, emails and facebook messages on my previous post. Whatever our beliefs, background or religion, there is no doubt that we all respond strongly when faced with injustice. It is what reminds me that we are all fundamentally noble beings, even if sometimes, some of us, forget what is right and what is wrong. Despite the story of these individuals (and you can read a CNN article on the matter if you want to), and the countless other similar stories we hear about each and every day, I am still proud to say that I look at the world with rose tinted glasses -- I do believe that what is good in us is more powerful that what is bad. So there is always hope! But now, let's move on to some fun stuff...

We have winners!!!

So, this is how it all went down. First I took all the names of those that left comments (I removed one or two people that asked not to be included) and used
Random.org to create a random order for the names...

Then I asked Random to pick 3 random numbers...

I matched the numbers to the list and here are our winners - congratulations to: Amy, Kadria and Heather. I will be contacting you guys for your mailing address!

This was a lot of fun and I must admit, I felt so sad that I didn't have enough gifts to give away to everyone that left a comment. But fear not! I plan to have more small giveaways in the future... so stay posted for more!

Six Bahá'í leaders arrested in Iran

Well, the tone of this blog is usually quite light-hearted but I wanted to share a story with you that has been on my mind all day. As most of you know, I am a member of the Bahá'í Faith (you can find out more here, or email me with any questions you might have). I cannot imagine how it must be like to live through something like this, how the family members of these individuals must feel as their loved ones are taken away, unsure as what the future holds for them. All I can do is pray for them, and hope that justice can be served and their rights be respected.

Six Bahá'í leaders arrested in Iran; pattern matches deadly sweeps of early 1980s
15 May 2008

— Six Bahá’í leaders in Iran were arrested and taken to the notorious Evin prison yesterday in a sweep that is ominously similar to episodes in the 1980s when scores of Iranian Bahá’í leaders were summarily rounded up and killed.

The six men and women, all members of the national-level group that helped see to the minimum needs of Bahá’ís in Iran, were in their homes Wednesday morning when government intelligence agents entered and spent up to five hours searching each home, before taking them away.

The seventh member of the national coordinating group was arrested in early March in Mashhad after being summoned by the Ministry of Intelligence office there on an ostensibly trivial matter.

“We protest in the strongest terms the arrests of our fellow Bahá'ís in Iran,” said Bani Dugal, the principal representative of the Bahá’í International Community to the United Nations. “Their only crime is their practice of the Bahá’í Faith.”

“Especially disturbing is how this latest sweep recalls the wholesale arrest or abduction of the members of two national Iranian Bahá’í governing councils in the early 1980s -- which led to the disappearance or execution of 17 individuals,” she said.

“The early morning raids on the homes of these prominent Bahá’ís were well coordinated, and it is clear they represent a high-level effort to strike again at the Bahá’ís and to intimidate the Iranian Bahá’í community at large,” said Ms. Dugal.

Arrested yesterday were: Mrs. Fariba Kamalabadi, Mr. Jamaloddin Khanjani, Mr. Afif Naeimi, Mr. Saeid Rezaie, Mr. Behrouz Tavakkoli, and Mr. Vahid Tizfahm. All live in Tehran. Mrs. Kamalabadi, Mr. Khanjani, and Mr. Tavakkoli have been previously arrested and then released after periods ranging from five days to four months.

Arrested in Mashhad on 5 March 2008 was Mrs. Mahvash Sabet, who also resides in Tehran. Mrs. Sabet was summoned to Mashhad by the Ministry of Intelligence, ostensibly on the grounds that she was required to answer questions related to the burial of an individual in the Bahá’í cemetery in that city.

On 21 August 1980, all nine members of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of Iran were abducted and disappeared without a trace. It is certain that they were killed.

The National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of Iran was reconstituted soon after that but was again ravaged by the execution of eight of its members on 27 December 1981.

A number of members of local Bahá’í governing councils, known as local Spiritual Assemblies, were also arrested and executed in the early 1980s, before an international outcry forced the government to slow its execution of Bahá’ís. Since 1979, more than 200 Bahá’ís have been killed or executed in Iran, although none have been executed since 1998.

In 1983, the government outlawed all formal Bahá’í administrative institutions and the Iranian Bahá’í community responded by disbanding its National Spiritual Assembly, which is an elected governing council, along with some 400 local level elected governing councils. Bahá'ís throughout Iran also suspended nearly all of their regular organizational activity.

The informal national-level coordinating group, known as the Friends, was established with the knowledge of the government to help cope with the diverse needs of Iran’s 300,000-member Baháí community, which is the country’s largest religious minority.

The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran writes about the incident here, and you can find more background information about the persecution of the Baháís in Iran over here. Also the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center issued this press release condemning the arrest today.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. It means a lot to me.

No cookies were harmed in the making animation. Ok, I lie. One cookie was harmed in the making of this animation. Or maybe two. Will you believe three? Also, my New Year Resolution might have been slightly injured. A bit. Or a lot. It might be dead. We're not sure.
But it was soooooo worth it.

I think Deb is a genius, because these cookies? I will give you my cat in exchange for these cookies (ok, that works out way better for me than it does for you but whatever). I think these cookies deserve an award, as well as some vanilla ice-cream between two of them.

pay it forward

Last week, lovely Amie from A Punkin Card Company emailed me to let me know that I had won a giveaway on her blog. EEEEK! I can't tell you how excited I was about this because... me? I don't usually win stuff. And when I found out my head exploded (ok, it didn't, but if it ever does I hope it looks like this). So, just like that, a box full of amazing treats from a variety of Etsy sellers arrived at my doorstep. I can't tell you how much ooohing and aaaahing was involved while I unpacked the box and all the goodies it contained, but it was so much that brookie complained she couldn't indulge in her 3rd morning nap due to all the ruckus I was causing.

After the initial "It's all MINE! MINE! MINE!" outburst, I took a moment, settled down, and remembered my favorite quote, and realized that it was just not fair that I should keep all this good stuff for myself. I had been blessed by the gods of randomness I decided I should do something in return. In that spirit, I have decided to part with some of the items in the box and spread the love out into the blog world. So, here it goes: I am going to create 3 little packages with some of the goodies from Amie's giveaway, plus a few little things from yours truly. If you are interested, leave a comment by the end of the week (Sunday May 11th) and then I will randomly pick 3 winners. Please make sure you leave some kind of contact information (be it a blog address, email, etc) so I can reach you!

And here is a list of all the talented designers and artists who contributed to Amie's giveaway - all of their work is beautiful, sweet, thoughtful and I am so glad I get to spread their names out there!
A Punkin Card Company, LemachiDesigns, karma711, Flight Fancy, Scribble It, Wonderfully Sew Knit, Kimono Cards, Andy Eats Only Candy, The Belfry, Little Pink Plum, Whimsypics, Always Amy, Wirelily, Pegg Macko Designs, Mintage Designs, JeMS JEWELS, Just For Fun Crafts, Simply Sentimental, Lemachi Designs, Iowa Gourd Society, Trendy Treasures.

lilacs

When I visited Brooklyn Flea a couple of weeks back I mentioned I had picked up a little something I was very pleased with. Nothing grandiose, just a yellow aluminum tea pot, but it caught my fancy when I saw it, the seller was willing to bargain and I bought it (along with a couple wooden spoons and a wooden knife). Shirin was very curious to know what it was I had bought and I was just as eager to post about my sweet little find. Elizabeth said it would be perfect for ice tea, so I thought "Ah! I will make a batch of mint ice tea to enjoy during the upcoming warm spring days and then I can post the recipe on my blog and show off my pot." I am so smart like that.
Well, so much for that plan because Shamim was quick to point out once I bought it home that:
1. it was ugly and we should throw it out
2.
he hated it and we should throw it out
3. it had a small hole in the bottom of it and we should throw it out

Notice a pattern here? Yeah, I thought so. I was heartbroken (about the hole, not Shamim's dislike of the item), but there was no way I was throwing out a perfectly cute yellow pot. What am I crazy? I know you understand me. I finally figured out a way to use the pot - and a nice big bunch of lilacs I picked up this evening were the perfect excuse to try it out.

The solution to the hole-hence-leaking-water-issue? Simple! Another recent purchase that Shamim is not too impressed about: Vodka shooters!

Awkward silence.
Amy? Amy, you don't drink honey, remember?

Yes, yes, I know. They were bought with the express purpose of holding little flower buds. Which is exactly what they are doing tonight - I slotted four of them in the pot, filled them with water and they are now holding the most fragrant bunch of lilacs. Now if only the weather collaborates I can actually make some mint ice tea and serve it up, though not in this tea pot. Sometime next week, hopefully!
